“La clemenza di Tito” – even with social distancing

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
La clemenza di Tito. Opera seria in due atti KV 621. Libretto: Caterino Mazzolà after Pietro Metastasio
Arrangement for chamber orchestra by Anna Skryleva
Ensemble: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, harpsichord, strings (4.4.3.2.1.)
Publisher: Alkor-Edition Kassel, AoE 10644
Performance material available on hire

“La clemenza di Tito”, Mozart’s last opera, written in 1791 for the coronation of the “Reform Emperor” Leopold II, is now available from Alkor in a reduced orchestration. Just 20 musicians are required to perform this opera seria.

Anna Skryleva’s careful yet convincing reduced orchestration of Mozart’s “La clemenza di Tito” has already proved doubly suitable for the stage during Corona times and under pandemic conditions. Skryleva first performed this in May 2020 in Magdeburg, directing the ensemble from the harpsichord, and in September and October 2021 the arrangement was performed in Winterthur. In her Opens external link in new windowinterview she explains that with the arrangement, she in no way wants to push herself to the fore as a composer. A chamber music version, to some extent even more transparent, came about because it was not possible to play Mozart in the original version. “I am convinced that this translucent version will enable many smaller ensembles and studio theatres to consider programming this masterwork. This version undoubtedly has the potential to secure a place in the repertoire, even after Corona times.”
